Almost every coat in our range is advertised as “waterproof”. But that says nothing about whether it also keeps your dog warm. That is the real difference most people overlook when buying.
| Type | Examples in our range | Protection | Warmth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure raincoat | Mackintosh Husum and Vimy, Happy Pet Go Walk | waterproof, Mackintosh also windproof | no warming padding |
| Lightweight in-between option | Trixie Calvi | waterproof and windproof | lightly padded |
| Winter coat | Trixie Explore Thermo, Winter Brizon | waterproof and windproof | padded, Brizon with honeycomb fleece |
Pure raincoats: protection without warmth
Our Mackintosh models (Husum, Vimy) are fully waterproof and windproof, but have no warming padding. They keep the rain off, but don't add any extra warmth. For a short walk in autumn drizzle, that is perfectly enough. The Happy Pet Go Walk mud coat works the same way: waterproof, with paw pads against mud, but without padding.
Warm winter coats: padding makes the difference
The Trixie Explore Thermo winter coat combines a waterproof and windproof outer shell with warming padding and a breathable membrane that reflects body heat. The Trixie Winter Brizon dog coat is padded and lined with honeycomb fleece, and is also waterproof and windproof. Both are made for frost and wind, not just for rain.
The transition: lightly padded
For autumn and spring, when it is grey and wet but not really cold yet, a lighter in-between option such as the Trixie Calvi dog coat is often enough: lightly padded, waterproof and windproof, but without the thick padding of a proper winter coat.
What you really need
A quick toilet trip outside in the rain, mild temperatures: a pure raincoat is enough. Frost, wind, long winter walks: a padded winter coat. Autumn and spring in between: a lightweight in-between option. Two coats for different seasons honestly make more sense than a single one that is supposed to do both well.
